ORIENTATION AND MOBILITY
For people with visual impairments, orientation is the use of the remaining senses to establish one’s position and relationship to other significant objects in the environment. Simply put, orientation is “Where I am? Where do I want to go? How to I get there?”
Mobility would be how one can move safely and efficiently from where they are (present position) to where they want to go (destination).
Basic orientation and mobility includes an assessment on how the person uses his/her remaining vision as well as other senses to move in space. The assessment also helps identify secondary sensory channels that the child can use in orienting himself or herself in the environment. The potential for mobility devices will be evaluated as well.
Students will be taught how to use their senses in navigating and orienting to both familiar and unfamiliar environments. Skills on how to maximise the use of their senses can be augmented with suitable vision and mobility aids.
These can include the identification cane, the white cane, as well as assistive devices like the monocular. Training in their appropriate use will be provided.
