2021 Parent Support Group – Tertiary
A total of 25 parents and students signed up for our online parents support group talk on “Preparing your Portfolio for Post-Secondary and Tertiary Institutions” by Ms Sng Sok Hwee. Ms Sng has a master’s in counselling and has over 15 years of experience as a guidance counsellor in international and Singapore schools.
Ms Sng began by sharing with the participants how a portfolio should look and the components of an effective portfolio. She also shared some websites that parents and students can explore to discover more about the various occupations globally and look if one is desirous of new knowledge.
She then challenged both parents and students to look beyond the traditional definition of success. She wanted to see how they can explore their interests and gain transferable skills through experiential learning, emphasizing the importance of 21st Century skills – thinking critically, interacting with others, and staying relevant. This mindset is a dramatic shift focusing on strict academic excellence to flexibility and adaptability for some parents.
To some, this was a novel idea that threatened the very heart of their beliefs. Some parents came out strong in support of this new paradigm of thought. A few were silent and thoughtful, probably reflecting on exchange and their position. It was indeed a thought-provoking, self-reflecting session with Ms Sng.
She also shared how a portfolio should look like and the components of an effective portfolio.
