MAGNIFIERS
CCTVs (Desktop Magnifier)
CCTV or Closed Circuit Television is a light projection system that enlarges an image of print, or objects for viewing. It can be a light, handheld model that can be easily carried in a pocket or handbag; or a large desktop model.
Magnification can go up to 40x, depending on the type and model chosen. Different models and makes offer different features that may or may not be necessary for a particular user. An Assistive Technology Assessment will help determine the type and model most appropriate for each individual user.
Handheld Magnifiers
Hand-held magnifiers have similar functions to desktop magnifiers, except they are portable. Users would use it for spot reading, for example, looking at a price tag, reading a menu or a book call number in the library. The hand-held magnifiers give the user accessibility to enlarge the print on the go.
Low-Tech Magnifiers
These can range from simple handheld ones easily available in shops for the general public. However, in most instances, magnification does not go beyond 2x/3x. Higher magnification can only be obtained from specialist suppliers upon prescription by a low vision clinician, an ophthalmologist, or an orthoptist. Depending on the user, some may be prescribed a handheld model, while other may be recommended a stand magnifier.
