Parents Konnect Secondary is a network for parents who have children attending Secondary Schools. In today’s series, Associate Vision Teacher Ms Natasha De Silva touched on “Knowing My Teenager”. Four families joined her to share how they communicated and understood their teenagers. Parents were able to learn from the other parents how they can get to know their teens better and learn to advocate for themselves.

Listening to parents allowed the vision teachers to find strategies that can help parents teach their teens how to advocate and get to know them better.

In today’s series, a speaker, Ms Brenda Lea Ann, joined the parents and teacher of iC2 PrepHouse for the series on ‘Building Our Child’s Literacy Skills. Six families joined us in today’s series. Ms Brenda has been in the Early Childhood industry since 2005. Her understanding of working with young children in preschools gave parents a better experience of building up their child’s literacy. Vision teachers from iC2 PrepHouse were able to help bridge how a child with visual impairment would learn literacy. Ms Brenda’s session had parents playing games that would help spark interest in their child’s learning. Parents were engaged with the speaker and had asked questions along the way.

After a long wait for the sports stadiums to be opened to group activities, the iC2 Athletics Programme, Season 3 resumed on 6 November 2021 at Bishan Stadium. Safe distancing measures were strictly enforced, and each athlete could only be paired with their parent, and each pair maintained at least 2 metres from each other. Despite these restrictions, the athletes were eager and excited to start running with Coach Sarav again!

Halfway through, our training at Bishan Stadium was disrupted due to the Suzuki Cup football tournament. Our ever-resourceful Coach Sarav managed to find a temporary training spot at Yio Chu Kang Stadium, where we could continue our training albeit with much modifications due to the limited space, and the rain prevented us from going down to the tracks.

Our training will resume again after the Christmas and New Year break. See you next year!

Parents Konnect is important to us as we hear from our parents. On Saturday 23 Oct 2021 morning, four families joined Associate Vision Teacher Ms Natasha De Silva on the “Interacting With My Child” series. Parents gathered to share their struggles and challenges in engaging with their children. Each family took turns to provide their feedback. It was heartening for the teachers who joined the Parents Konnect to understand and appreciate the parents’ efforts.

With such a wide array of learning, Ms Natasha shared how parents could take a step back and break down their teaching to make it an impactful learning activity for their children. We want to invite more parents to join us when we run on Parents Konnect to network with other parents from iC2 PrepHouse Limited. Parents Konnect Primary is a network for parents who have children attending Primary Schools. In today’s series, Associate Vision Teacher Ms Natasha De Silva touched on the topic “Feedback On My Child Using Assistive Technology (AT) to Access The Curriculum”. Five families joined her to provide their feedback on using AT in classrooms. Our student, Matthew Ng, shared his view as he had joined in the meeting with his mother, Mrs Geraldine Ng. His insights were helpful for the families with younger students and beginning users of the AT devices. Parents shared how their children were using theirs AT machines.

After the sessions, the vision teachers at iC2 PrepHouse had a better understanding of tailoring their programmes. Listening to parents and how they feel AT has benefited their children gave us the determination to ensure our students are fully trained in their devices to become independent users. As part of Heidrick and Struggles’ Global Day of Service, iC2 PrepHouse was chosen as their beneficiary this year. On 22 October 2021, our iC2 team comprising our Executive Director – Jamuna, Assistant Vision Teacher – Alyssa, Associate Vision Teacher – Natasha and Assistant Vision Teacher Amanda had a zoom session with the Singapore team Heidrick and Struggles. They conducted a workshop on Visual Impairment. Heidrick and Struggles staff mentioned that the discussion in the breakout rooms was insightful and made them think more about inclusion. Matthew Ng (together with his mother, Mrs Geraldine Ng) and James Ang shared their challenges and how iC2 PrepHouse helped them overcome these challenges.
