The workshop provided a refresher for the teachers who had previously attended the workshop and a good learning session for the teachers who had not attended the workshop. Bob could remember working with 2 of our students 3 years ago and he was amazed with their development.

Profile of Professor Bob Marek
Prof. Marek is a lecturer of English at the John Paul 11 University in Lublin Poland. Many years ago Prof. Marek developed an interest in teaching English to children and adults who are blind. In doing this work, he listened to the childrens’ comments regarding the visual world surrounding them. It was obvious to him that there were many visual concepts that the children struggled to understand. It also became apparent to Prof. Marek that there is often a lack of appropriate resources for teachers of the blind to use when teaching chal-lenging visual concepts. From humble beginnings the saying goes…. he started designing wonderful resources to meet this need. Prof. Marek had received an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth for his work with blind children.

A special thanks to the NIE trainee teachers for their help in creating tactile resources. They were given pointers by Ada on how these tactile resources are to be created so that they can be easily accessible by our students.

On the 27 April 2018, the teachers of iC2 PrepHouse conducted a training session for a class of 31 Secondary 4 students at Saint Patrick’s School. The training aims to impart knowledge and awareness on visual impairments to these students. It also includes a segment to train these students to conduct booth activities during their upcoming awareness carnival.

Stretch! Jump! Throw! Run! Our students had great fun from Learn-To-Play Athletics program. This program was conducted by a mainstream sports coach and it was well received by our students. We are thankful to two of our volunteers who had also attended this program to provide manpower support.

Teacher Lay Hong from iC2 PrepHouse was invited to give a talk on how iC2 support students with visual impairment in mainstream schools at Tan Tock Seng Hospital Atrium during the World Glaucoma Day. iC2 was invited as well to participate in the Eye Health Fair, jointly organised by National Eye Institute and Tan Tock Seng Hospital. The Eye Health Fair was a great opportunity to build awareness of Glaucoma and other eye ailments as well as the services iC2 PrepHouse provides to help children and youth with visual impairment integrate into mainstream society.
