2024 Guide Dogs Singapore Family Day @ Star Vista

We are privileged to be one of the partners for Guide Dogs Singapore at their GDS Family Day event, held at Star Vista on 27 October 2024. The day was filled with engaging activities for all ages, including opportunities to meet Guide Dogs Singapore’s wonderful guide dogs, participate in complimentary eye checks, and enjoy interactive quizzes with exciting prizes.

Our booth featured the “Decode the Quotes” game, where visitors tried their hand at decoding quotes using the Unified English Braille (UEB) chart. This activity provided them with a fun, hands-on experience with Braille.

2024 iC2 Parent Support Group (PSG)

On October 26, 2024, the Parent Support Group welcomed another key speaker to share her journey as a parent with us. This time, it was none other than our very own iC2 Teacher Lay Hong! She shared her experiences raising two accomplished para-swimmers, Sophie and Colin, offering tips on navigating the unique journey of supporting para-athletes — the challenges involved and strategies for overcoming them. Her talk was followed by an engaging Q&A session.

Teacher Lay Hong’s session was both inspiring and enlightening, especially for parents interested in helping their visually impaired children engage in meaningful physical activities. The biggest takeaway was that sports truly are for everyone, and parents play a pivotal role in guiding their children in the right direction. Beyond physical fitness, sports can also shape an individual’s character and mental resilience.

Overall, it was a highly valuable session, and parents gained much insight from Teacher Lay Hong’s personal experiences.

2024 iC2 Braille Course

Ms Elizabeth McCann from the Scottish Sensory Centre and Edinburgh University conducted a two-day Braille teaching course for teachers at iC2. Two Braillists from the Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped (SAVH) and two teachers from Lighthouse School also participated in the course.

Participants were shown strategies for imparting different pre-Braille skills to young learners to prepare them for learning Braille.
