2015 Bowling

The children had a delightful bowling session at the Planet Bowl. With the friendly and patient coach guiding them, they managed to pick up skills from learning how to select a proper fit bowling ball for themselves to the finishing position arm swing drills.

2015 Zoo Trip

An educational zoo trip was organized for our students on 19th Oct 2015. They had the opportunity to touch various animal specimen with different types of body covering such as pangolin, snake, porcupine etc. Live animal contact session include royal python and hedgehog. Some children needed some coaxing before they were brave enough to touch the animals.

After the session in the auditorium, we took a tram ride to Rainforest KidzWorld. Here, our students had a contact session with two Fallabella miniature horse. The students were excited with anticipation as they queued to take turns to stroke the miniature horse.

The zoo trip ended with our students feeding a group of hungry goats with strips of carrots and cucumbers given out by the zoo team.

2015 CapitaLand Hope Foundation ‪Carnival

On behalf of our students, we would like to thank the good people of ‪Capitaland Hope Foundation‬ for putting together the 100k Hope Hours Challenge experiential heritage trail and Carnival.

Regrettably, the heritage trail was cancelled as the haze situation for the day was in the unhealthy range. But kudos to the team for activating the contingency Carnival venue at Raffles City level 3 and sending out the mass SMSs to all participants in the wee hours of morning. The alternate venue was much smaller but it made for closer interactions and, despite close quarters, a fun time was had by all.

Our thanks to our President, Dr Tony Tan, for gracing the occasion and making the day extra special for our three students, “Amy”, “Ben” and “Carol”. The President posed for pictures and was presented with the very first independent tactile drawing ever made by our blind student, “Amy”, and a copy of our coffee table book, ‪”‎Our World Can Be Vibrant Too!”‬, containing testimonials and words of encouragement from eye care professionals, school teachers, students, parents, volunteers and staff.

Students and staff also had the opportunity to pose for pictures with Olympian Mr. Canagasabai Kunalan, who represented Singapore at the 1968 Mexico City Games.

And, finally, our thanks to the President’s Challenge Secretariat for selecting us to be one of the beneficiaries of the 2015 President’s Challenge – We Care.

2015 Sports Appreciation Tea

Ms Theresa Goh, Paralympian and world record holder of several swimming events graced the appreciation tea we hosted for the beneficiaries who took part in the SPH Foundation National Para-Swimming Championships 2015 and the National Para-Athletics Championships 2015. Several athletes were not able to attend – for example, one was selected by her school for the F1 Experience that weekend. However, we had several additional families with children attending and we hope the message Ms Goh brought and the example of the athletes who participated in both sports meets will motivate them to participate next year.

2015 Professional Development by Bob Marek

iC2 PrepHouse teachers having a professional development session with Professor Boguslaw Marek on the “Hungry Fingers” educational materials he developed for the blind and visually impaired.

At the end of the session, a copy of our coffee table book, “Our World Can Be Vibrant Too!”, containing testimonials and words of encouragement from eyecare professionals, school teachers, students, parents, volunteers and staff was presented to Professor Boguslaw Marek by our Executive Director, Jamuna.

“Hungry Fingers educational tools are designed to give visually impaired children the confidence that with poor vision, or even without sight, they can be in command of the space around them. They can learn how objects are related to one another, and why they look, or feel different when we draw them. They can learn that space can be divided and altered in many different ways, and that they are the one who decide how they want to change it.” By Prof. Marek

Profile of Professor Bob Marek
Prof. Marek is a lecturer of English at the John Paul 11 University in Lublin Poland. Many years ago Prof. Marek developed an interest in teaching English to children and adults who are blind. In doing this work, he listened to the childrens’ comments regarding the visual world surrounding them. It was obvious to him that there were many visual concepts that the children struggled to understand. It also became apparent to Prof. Marek that there is often a lack of appropriate resources for teachers of the blind to use when teaching chal-lenging visual concepts. From humble beginnings the saying goes…. he started designing wonderful resources to meet this need. Prof. Marek had received an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth for his work with blind children.
