Learning Media Assessment

The Learning Media Assessment gives an objective evaluation and selection of the best learning and literacy medium or media suitable for the children with visual impairments, be it large or enlarged print, braille, auditory, regular print with aids, etc. This comprehensive assessment includes a reading assessment to determine the efficacy of each medium. It also identifies potential literacy medium that the child could develop to enhance his or her learning experience.

THE ASSESSMENT
The Learning Media Assesment (LMA) first determines the child’s primary and secondary sensory channels, through interviews and observations.

A reading assessment follows to evaluate the child’s efficiency in reading in the main medium chosen. A continuing assessment usually done annually, is a reevaluation of the child’s primary literacy medium to ensure that the chosen medium is still effective for the child.

Where a supplemental literacy medium is suggested, or a change to the primary literacy medium is possible, a comparison of the two is made to determine the more efficient medium, and hence possibly a new literacy medium for the child.

A reading and comprehension test can also help to identify the strategy used by the child in reading, and where inadequacies lie.

THE REPORT
A report on the efficiency and efficacy of the media or medium is given following the Literacy Media Assessment (LMA). Recommendations will then be made on the learning medium for the child. Strategies to improve reading skills and speed will also be recommended where needed.
